Javier Marzo Cosculluela

Javier Marzo Cosculluela holds a Bachelor in Law from the Autonomous University of Madrid. He has also studied European Union law at the University of Amsterdam. He holds a Master in International Relations (with focus on International Political Economy) from the University of Southern California (as a ‘la Caixa’ Foundation fellow).

Javier Marzo Cosculluela has been a partner in Garrigues’ corporate law department since 2004. He is co-head of the telecommunications and media area and an active member of the Garrigues Digital initiative.

His main area of expertise is corporate law. He has been involved in numerous M&A, acquisition financing, and private equity transactions across various sectors, including technology, media, telecommunications, sports, energy, and infrastructure. He also advises clients on privatisations, cross-border transactions, and general corporate matters on a regular basis.

In the telecommunications and media sector, he has wide experience in regulatory and contractual matters where he is recognised in the market as an expert. He has advised operators, investors, media groups, and investment funds in connection with, among other matters, audio-visual rights, broadcast licenses, start-ups, licence bids, special projects (such as content platforms, network sharing, outsourcing, fibre optics roll-outs, or MVNOs), IPOs, and state subsidies.

He was international associate at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett, in New York, and is currently co-head of the US Desk at Garrigues.

Javier Marzo Cosculluela has been featured in various directories — including PLC Which Lawyer, Best Lawyers (2013 Lawyer of the Year in Media), and Chambers & Partners — in the area of technology, media, and telecommunications (TMT). Marzo Coscullela has also been awarded the ILO Client Choice Award 2010 in M&A Spain.

From 2004 to 2013, he was a lecturer at Comillas Pontifical University (ICADE), teaching telecommunications law. He has also been involved in a number of telecommunications and media-related graduate programmes at IE University, ICADE, Universidad Carlos III, San Pablo CEU University, and Universidad Europea de Madrid. Marzo Cosculluela is a frequent speaker at seminars and conferences in various forums.

He is a member of the Madrid Bar Association.
